802.1x on Mac

Is 802.1x a correct configuration profile for Mac Air? While setting up Ethernet connection checked other settings including Wi-Fi settings and noticed 802.1x under Wi-Fi options but do not remember this being an option before.

Ethernet connection was unsuccessful so I disconnected shut down and restarted but the 802.1x remained.

Read other articles about 802.1x and it’s says it’s a windows configuration. Since I’ve had previous targeted network breaches when using windows, I tried removing 802.1x through system preferences but was not successful.

I completed a reset and restored Mac OS but 802.1x remains. What I found about Wi-Fi config in Mac it includes 802.11 a/b/g/ah/ax but not 802.11.

Is there reason for concern with 802.1x profile configuration?

802.1x is an authentication standard. It provides a way to tunnel EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) between clients that want access, and authentication servers (typically RADIUS servers) that determine whom to let in.

One of the methods people use with 802.1x is certificate-based. You have a Windows-based authentication server issue certificates to be installed on Windows client PCs. When the PCs try to connect to a protected WiFi network, instead of popping up a request for a password, they use the certificates to authenticate themselves to the network.
