Should my iPhone’s battery indicator show that it’s charging when connected & charging with MagSafe?

Yes, there should be an on-screen circular indicator when you first connect the MagSafe charger and iPhone starts charging, and the charging icon (see below) should appear in the status bar while iPhone is charging.
