Apple Car play giving wrong GPS navigation directions

I connected my iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 16.6 to rental car Toyota RAV4 CarPlay while traveling in Seattle. The maps and directions worked ok on the phone. But when connected to CarPlay directions were all messed up. It kept rerouting and asked me to Proceed to the route. This happened with both Apple Maps and Google maps. Also my location drifted by several thousand feet from my actual location when connected to CarPlay. The location was accurate when not connected to CarPlay. Wondering if there is a compatibility issue when device gets connected to CarPlay.

Hey Sanjay408,

We'd recommend reviewing this article as it provides steps to help resolve issues with CarPlay: If you need help with CarPlay - Apple Support

"First, make sure that your country or region supports CarPlay and that your car supports CarPlay. If you're unsure if your car supports CarPlay, contact the vehicle manufacturer.

Make sure that your iPhone has the latest version of iOS. If your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, follow these steps—checking CarPlay after each step:

  1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:
    • If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
    • If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your iPhone under Settings > Bluetooth. Then go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on.
  1. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display and select it.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car.
  3. Make sure that Siri is on.
  4. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is on, tap Allowed Apps, and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.
  5. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.
  6. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

If you still have issues connecting to CarPlay, contact Apple Support."

Thanks!

I am having the same problem with new ‘24 RAV4 Hybrid. I have found that sometimes when I put in a route from the iPhone 14 (IOS17.4.1) using a cable hookup, I have problems. The directions are all over the map on the RAV screen and it keeps trying to get “back to the route”, even though I am on the route. The arrowhead (car location) is circling and off of the actual route, while I am on the correct route. Sometimes it works fine, and other times it goes wacky and I have to pull the cable and use just the phone to drive. Any suggestions?

We have been using it from time to time, and it is not always working. Sometimes it works for the first few searches and then goes wacky later in the drive. We are going to use another cable next, then try blue tooth. Both the RAV4 and the iPhone are at latest level of updates. The RAV4 system works by itself (if we can get it take oral addresses). The iPhone works by itself. It is the car play that seems screwy.
