What is the largest external disk that I can add to my MacBook?
I wish to have large amount of memory available on my MacBook Air, M2, and what is the largest that I can attach?

Depends on whether you need portability, and how much you want to spend.
Portable hard drives are up to 5 TB or more; desktop hard drives, to 20 TB or more. Portable SSDs are up to 4 TB. Even USB flash drives are up to as much as 512 GB or 1 TB - but I would not rely on one of those as a primary drive.
Don’t forget to get backup drives and to make backups.
For an external SSD or HDD? For as far as I know there is no size limit. I use 1 TB ones
Best of luck!
The largest one you can afford.
