What's up with WhatsApp draining battery at warp speed?

I have TWO iPhones (SE and XR) and the What'sApp App is draining my battery dead within three hours! This started with the latest update a week ago. My iPhone SE (1st Ed) running off update 15.7.8 sucks my battery dead since the update a week ago. In fact, the batter usage states 92% WhatsApp! The battery heath states Maximum capacity is 100% and peak performance as the battery is only one year old. Is anyone else noting this problem?

I also have recently realised that WhatsApp is taking more battery. When I check my battery stats I found out that it is running in background for like 6-7 hrs everyday. So if you also see the similar thing then try turning off background app refresh.

Thanks! I live down here in Guatemala and that is about all everyone uses here so it kind of is the standard whether I want to use it or not! I even uninstalled the App and reinstalled it, but that did not solve the issue. I contacted Apple support for iPhone with the issue as well. It very well may come down to gutting it out until Apple iPhone fixes the bug.

Don't forget that WhatsApp is owned by a data harvesting company and that is where they get their profits. They will use any information that you have given them permission to use. Their App Privacy disclosure in the App Store claims they use:

  • Purchases
  • Locations
  • Contacts
  • Identifiers
  • Diagnostics
  • Financial Info
  • Contact Info
  • User Content
  • Usage Data.

In addition you may have even granted access for them to use your Photo Library. That is a lot of info for them to collect and will require battery power to send it all to them.

Unfortunately, it's not Apple's bug to fix. It's Facebook/Meta's. Their apps are well-known memory and power hogs. And, in the last couple of months, they've released a number of problematic updates.

It would be up to Meta to fix any bugs with their App and not Apple. You could send feedback to Meta, but as stated before, that is their business practice to gather as much information from you as possible and I don't suspect they will change their ways. Messages is end to end encrypted just like WhatsApp and in most cases offers better security especially when it comes to your personal data. It is also installed on every iPhone, although not compatible with Android.
