Misconception About iPad Updating.

I've seen highly regarded community users state in 2023 that you can't update your iPad with a data hotspot. But I'm here to correct that. Maybe it's because my phones are always Android?

But you can absolutely update your iPad with a data hotspot. Wi-Fi isn't necessary.

My iPad is the iPad 8 and it's been recently updated a few times through my phones hotspot because that hotspot *is* essentially my "Wi-Fi".

I don't have home Internet and haven't in several months.

And my iPad updates no problem each time. Including right this very moment. It's 1/3rd of the way done installing the most recent update for the ipad 8. iPadOS 16.6 I think it is?

So, even though someone can have a great reputation and get things right a lot of the time, this is proof that sometimes even the people with the best intentions can make mistakes and accidentally promote false information as fact/truth.

So if someone says something minor like "can't do it with.../must be connected to..."

Don't immediately give it blind trust. Because you might end up missing out on an update that you thought you couldn't get even though you could.

And as you can see, it updated just fine through my phone! A crappy Moto e4 connected to 5g(or maybe it only connects to 4g but my plan is intended for 5g.) Update took roughly only 20 minutes give or take, including downloading.

The hotspot limitation exists only when iPhones or cellular iPads are providing the hotspot. It does not exist when providing a hotspot from other non-apple devices as those appear as Wi-Fi networks.

I thought Phil0124's explanation was pretty clear. It is how a hotspot identifies itself to an Apple device. Apple devices tell your device they are an Apple mobile device. Other devices just appear as valid wifi providers and your device can't tell they aren't a real wifi service.

Anyway, did you read the updated version of the article to which I provided a link? Things have changed.
