Security lockout despite no attempts to enter passcoded

Have an Iphone 14 with most recent IOS (phone is locked so cannot confirm version). I place my Iphone in the center rear pocket of my jersey when on cycling training rides. During the duration of the ride, about 2 to 2.5 hours, there are no attempts to use the phone. Upon completion of the ride there have been several instances where the phone is locked for 90 minutes. It is incredibly frustrating to experience the security lockout when I need to access the phone. Anyone else experience this problem? I certainly don't want to erase the Iphone. That seems draconian, so I wait out the lock out period.
