Notes folders missing after syncing iPad with iCloud

I use iPhone and recently started using iPad Pro. I created a lot of work notes on my iPad and realized I could not access them on my iPhone. Per Apple help document instructions, I went to settings, name, iCloud, show all, notes to turn on sync with iCloud. All my notes were in the - All iCloud folder on my iPad but when the sync finished, all the work notes on the iPad were missing. I have followed all instructions to retrieve deleted files and nothing…the folders and notes in them are nowhere to be found.

That was a lot of work that just disappeared. I assumed that syncing would be a 2-way sync so information on my iPhone would show up on the iPad and vice versa. Is there a way to locate and retrieve this close to 200 work notes?

Thank you.

Assuming that your Notes remain accessible in iCloud, begin by disabling iCloud Notes on your iPad:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > iCloud > [Apps Using iCloud] Show All > Notes > Sync This iPad - set to OFF

Next, close the settings App - and then force-restart your iPad:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

After restart, you can re-enable iCloud Notes:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > iCloud > [Apps Using iCloud] Show All > Notes > Sync This iPad - set to ON

Hopefully your iPad will now begin to synchronise Notes from iCloud. Depending upon how much data there is to synchronise - and the speed of your internet connection - the background sync’ process may take some time to complete.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:
