Are we really back in the dark/stone ages that we can only upload files in JPEG format? Am I just hitting the dabs too hard or is this actually what Apple is offering in terms of supported files that can be uploaded into our Photos folder?

From the support page Upload and download photos using iCloud.com:
"You can upload JPEG images from your computer to your Personal Library using iCloud.com."
If you wish to store files of a different format, iCloud Drive may be a better fit for your needs. See Use iCloud Drive on iCloud.com for details on how to use that service.
