Toggling invisibility (Command-Shift-.) reveals that there are two Library folders in my User folder, as I said in an earlier post. Terminal's ls command shows me that the non-blessed Library folder has "?Library" as its name. That clarifies why Finder tolerates the two folders' simultaneous existence. Why that preceding ? character in the non-standard Library folder's name was not displayed when I toggled invisibility adds to my confusion.
In sum, I have two Library folders in my User folder when I should only have one. One of them is the expected, blessed Library folder that's normally invisible; the other has a non-standard name and was evidently created by some software on my machine. The contents of the non-standard Library folder consist of two Application Support folders. Terminal's ls reveals that those folders' names differ by an invisible suffix consisting of the last letter of the folder's name followed by a space. That explains why Finder displays them as it does. That is, I suppose, some progress toward understanding what's happening.
Why this non-standard Library folder exists at all remains a mystery, as does its having two Application Support folders within it. The existence of Sample folders in both Application Support folders suggests an audio app as their origin. To discover the answer I suspect I'll have to direct some pointed questions to the makers of my audio software.
