Afraid to update my ipod touch to 4.0.2...

okay, so, the laptop i usually use to sync my ipod with is....gone. the hard drive is fried and so that means i no longer have all of my music files and pictures. i have all of my things still on my ipod and i don't want to lose them. i've been using my mom's laptop to charge my ipod and whatnot, and today when i connected it, it told me about the new update... i'm really debating whether or not to do it because i'm afraid i'll lose all of my music/pictures since i don't have them stored anywhere else. will i be okay doing the update on her laptop or should i just play it safe and not do it? (btw, i already have the newest update before this one.)

If your media only exists on your iPod right now, do NOT install the new OS. If you're coming from 2.x or 3.x it will certainly be erased in the process with no ability to recover your media. If you're going from 4.0 to 4.0.2 then it wouldn't likely be erased, but there's always the chance something could go wrong in the process, forcing you into a Restore (erase).

Before you do anything with your iPod, get yourself a 3rd party software to extract the media from your iPod, there are plenty of them out there. Read this article for more information:
