zeus virus

How can I tell if I have this virus.

Console shows about 50 errors per second occurring.

Quicken support says zeus virus is causing trouble.

I have Windows on my Mac Book Pro via Parallels.

Windows, Windows 10

Normally I advise ignoring anything and everything in Console but 50 errors of <something> occurring every second seems like a lot. What are those errors? Are they all the same error? Post a representative sample.

Before you do that be advised I am interpreting 50 errors per second literally. Don't confuse errors and fault messages with all messages. The latter category would be completely normal and should be ignored.

That's how scam artists earn their living. Someone might, for example, succumb to some fraudulent "warning" and is deceived into calling some phone number on the other side of the world. The scam artist asks the caller to open Console and... oh no, look at all those messages! Fail, deny, unable, oh my!

😱

That sets the hook. The caller is then convinced of the urgent need to install some garbage that should never be installed on any Mac. In an effort to protect the user macOS will provide warnings regarding such junk but the user is told to ignore them because the "virus" has already infiltrated it to such a degree that the only hope is to give the scam artist a few hundred US dollars to ameliorate the damage. Payment in credit card and CVV codes cheerfully accepted, but your bank account number is ok too. Lucky for them it's on sale today, 50% off. By the way they also need your Apple ID and all sorts of passwords — "for your protection" of course. Whatever software the user is convinced to install is limited only to the imagination. The hapless user might have installed remote monitoring software or bitcoin mining or keyloggers or whatever, and their Apple ID is in the wind.

The damage is done.

Meanwhile, the frightened user is told everything is now ok and how happy they should be that their Mac has been protected and is now virus-free. For proof, the user is directed to open Console again and click "Errors and Faults" which now shows minimal or no activity.

Everyone's happy!

Think that's an exaggeration? Think again. "Your system is infected with (3) Viruses” when opening a Safari tab is over five years old with nearly a quarter million unique views. And that's just one Discussion, on just one fairly obscure website few Mac users even know about (this one). Do you think I have half a chance of convincing them that there has never been — nor will there ever be — a macOS virus?
