My iMac crashes without warning and does not restart with the power button. I must unplug the power cord and wait 5 seconds before replugging. Then, the computer starts automatically without pressing the power button.

The crash often occurs when using Safari or when left unattended overnight.

iMac, OS X 10.11

That's an indication of a failing power supply. I had the exact same experience with a 2014 27" iMac.

If you take it in for diagnostics and repair be sure to make a full an current backup of all of you user data because the repair people will want to erase the drive and install a pristine system without any user data to confirm it's a hardware issue.

Here are the instructions you requested.

It will help us get a good idea of what is causing your problem if you provide a report of your system, that way we do not have to play 20 questions with you. The report we are requesting does NOT provide any personal information and is extremely safe to use. Please navigate to www.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.

When you have your report, you can attach it when you reply to this message and we can then review it and help you determine what is needed to get your system running well again.

For instructions on how to download your EtreCheck report and attach it to your reply to this message please click How to use the Add Text Feature When Post… - Apple Community It is helpful to us if you download the report to your Desktop.

Here is your problem, you have CleanMyMac and McAfee installed. At best these are both 100% worthless as they offer no additional level of security to what Mac OS already offers. What they do provide you is the following:

  • A slow Mac
  • An unstable Mac ( much like you are experiencing)
  • Make Mac OS appear buggy and unstable.

All that Mac OS needs to remain secure and stable is to simply keep it up-to-date and restart the Mac about 1x every week. Other than that, please leave Mac OS alone!!!!!!!!!!!

You need to locate the uninstall instructions for both CMM and McAfee and run them. After doing so you need to run a fresh EtreCheck report and scan it to see if you find ANY evidence of CMM installed. If you do find that CMM and/or McAfee are still evident then you will need to manually remove each app which is a bit tedious but doable with the free version of FindAnyFile.

After both CMM and McAfee are uninstalled then your Mac should be stable and run as it should.

Going forward, please NEVER EVER install any third party:

  • Antivirus
  • Cleaning
  • Security
  • VPN
  • Maintenance apps

on any Mac!!

Thanks for the reply. What is an EtreCheck report? I do not currently have any of the apps or software mentioned. I have taken the iMac to the local Apple store at least 3 times and replaced the logic board. I have asked about the power supply but apparently this checked out ok. The crashes usually occur when clicking on a URL in Safari although if left on overnight, the system will likely shut down also.
