ejecting external backup drive from time machine

I have never been able to "properly" eject my Buffalo 2TB backup drive so every time I do, I end up with an error message. I have used the eject button at the top of my browser and the list of active drives in finder. What am I missing? This has been an issue for the past 3 years - and with my last MacBook pro. I keep the software up to date and other things I eject do so easily and cleanly.

I see lots of old threads with versions of this issue. Can someone please give me a clear, concise instruction so I don't end up with a corrupt drive?

Thanks

I just wrote all of this text but get an error message saying "my post must include text" try again. ????????

You can unmount (eject) the problem drive from the Terminal.app copy & paste:

diskutil umount

NOTE: notice the trailing blank space.. drag and drop the external drive icon to the Terminal window to complete the path. Use the enter\return key to proceed.

ex.

diskutil umount /Volumes/TimeMachine
