Price of YouTube Premium charged by Apple now going up to $18.99 a month?

i got a message from YouTube Premium saying my monthly cost is going up from $13.99 to $18.99. Why this was happening wasn't explained. then there was one line that said "Apple will be contacting you with more information." I didn't get anymore information so i called Apple support. The support person didn't know anything about it. A couple of days ago, i got a new message in the upper right corner of my display which starts with an A in a blue circle, the Apple logo, and it says: Subscription Price Increase, You Tube. Watch Listen Stream is raising its subscription price to $18.99.

It doesn't include any information. There's a button that says Show, the other option was Hide i think, not sure, i clicked on Show and what it showed me had nothing to do with that message. This is a bad feeling. i don't use You Tube premium that much to pay that much money for it. Given the inadequate communication from Apple about it, it just feels like low class price gouging.

Does anyone know anything about this and if there are any options to pay that much other than going without Premium? i googled it and read a few messages that say i can just subscribe directly to You Tube Premium without going through Apple and the price will be $15.99, which was the recent increase i already got. I'm pretty sure i already am subscribed through You Tube, i don't remember going through the App store or anything like that when i first signed up. I remember the subscription information about what it would cost and there wasn't that much to it, nothing about Apple. Suddenly i get this huge price increase on top of the other price increase by You Tube or Google or somebody.

I use primarily an MBP OS 10.15.7, and to a lesser extent my phone.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.12

Thanks for the thorough detailed answer, I’ll try to find out more by looking at what I’m being charged although I’m sure it’s in the range of $11.99-13.99. I did look at My Subscriptions on Apple, YouTube Premium wasn’t on there. There were things I didn’t recognize but nothing resembling that, nothing mentioning Google either. I did recently sign up for something called Apple Music because it was required to hear something I needed to hear. I didn’t see that listed in my subscriptions. Thanks for the link for unsubscribing. I’m still trying to find out how to know what I will lose if anything, if I resubscribe to you tube premium directly below but I tried doing that when I got the letter from them , followed the link in the email. When I got there, I was already signed in , with all my account information & subscription information, with the price of $13.99, so the only way to sign up would be to cancel my existing account first & then sign up again. At that point I hadn’t gotten the “additional information” from Apple the email said I’d get, so called Apple Support, but unable to clarify. Then I got that pop up message in the upper right corner of my screen saying price increase $18.99, no further information. I appreciate the link you provided. What I’m hoping not to do is to change anything with my existing YouTube premium account services because it’s been fine, no problems.

Seems Apple wouldn't have found a current YouTube subscription for you either.

Good to know you are signing in to your YourTube subscription ok anyway, which-ever company you are signed up with.

You may have signed up for a "Free Trial" of Apple Music ... if so, that would need to be cancelled at leat 24 hours before it expires, if you do not wish to continue with the monthly charges.
