Saving files to an internal 2TB HD on an iMac- can't!

This is a new iMac replacing an old one (12 yrs old!) so I'm just learning the machine and OS 13.5.1. I can save files to the desktop but not to the HD. I've tried all the Help files and on line Apple resources but no answer. I had a frustrating, non-responsive with an attempted online chat 2x. Help!

unlike my old iMac where one dragged files over the HD icon to save them to the HD, a good Chat with Apple told me that the way to do it in the new system is to create a HD Folder on the desktop and drag the files there. This accomplishes saving files to the HD. Before the helpful chat with Apple, I had 2 very unproductive, confusing and unhelpful chats with 2 other reps. That's when I posted this. Many thanks for responding.
