Can an older iPhone be backed up to a MacBook Air using bluetooth?
I don't have a USB connection that works with both the MB Air and the older iPhone

No. If you want to backup to your MacBook Air, you'll need to get the right cable for the job. If your MacBook Air is a more modern device, for an iPhone 6s, that would mean a lightning to USB C cable. There are loads of them you can buy on Amazon.com. You can visit your Apple Store or a BestBuy store as well.
