My computer automatically installed a new version of Microsoft Remote Desktop a couple of days ago, and now it won't open. When I try to open it, I just get a dialog box that says:
You can’t open the application “Microsoft Remote Desktop.app” because this application is not supported on this Mac.
I need this application for work. What happened and how do I fix it?
I deleted the app and reinstalled it, and now it works.
Deleting an app isn't easy. I deleted it from the Finder, but the App Store still showed it as installed. After searching around I saw that you could click on your name, find the application, right-click it, and select Uninstall. After that, you have to close the App Store entirely and relaunch it before it actually recognizes that the app is no longer there, and lets you uninstall it.
This is still a major problem. One should not have to reinstall an app that they supposedly already have the latest version of.

Maybe so, but it's a common issue as evidenced here by the many posts just like yours. Upgrades always carry some measure of risk; this one is rather slight.
Uninstall it, reinstall the old version and turn off auto updates for MS products.
Remove the checkmark.
Are you running a beta version of macOS?
FWIW, I just installed Microsoft Remote Desktop 10.9.0 on an Intel & Apple silicon Mac and it runs on both.
What version of macOS are you currently running?
No, I'm running Ventura 13.4.1 (c)
Try updating to Ventura 13.5.1 and test again.
From where did you install it? The App Store says I already have the latest version.
I installed MRD from the App Store. Ventura from System Settings > General > Software Update.
Updating Ventura did not resolve the problem. Also, the app's icon now has a grey "stop" symbol on it.
The update is coming (I assume) from the Mac app store, not Microsoft. So I don't think there's a way to disable auto updates just for Microsoft products.
