Finding the Carrier:
A. Ask your Friend. The Serial Number plays no role in determining who your Cellular Provider is.
B. As for Being Sold an iPhone:
Hand this back to your friend, and have them perform as instructed here, including the iCloud logout: What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
