'Discover/SSN' alert

I received this SMS message today. (obviously an attempted hack.) The '37353' was a clickable link.

call Discover, I just did and they said it's likely fake. I wouldn't click the link in the text either.

I suspect it is valid.

I copied the URL, pasted in a browser, it went to discover.com and a landing page that said discover.com.

a) Safari has protection against a domain that is one thing and displays another.

b) I use 1Password, it didn’t have any Watchtower alarm on the URL

c) I went to the Discover app, used Face recognition to get in and the same offer was on page 2

d) poor UX. If it said using your card ending in xxxx, and since you have already activated FICO watch, you will get notices from. xxxxxxx. I usually add those codes to my contacts so it shows up in iMessage with originator

e) to get those 5 digit text codes is much more expensive than a fake URL. probably valid if you have a Discover card.

I applied for a new Chase card.

Was notified by Discover on the same 'short code':

Discover Alert: New inquiry on your Experian(R) credit report. Visitxxxxxxxx Text STOP to Quit, HELP for info. Msg&Data Rates May Apply.

Googling the short code brought up the Discover Privacy pages.

Sadly, the Marketing departments in many companies do a poor job of keeping their Help Desks in the loop.
