Why isn’t my Apple Pencil 2nd gen not charging to my iPad Pro with my iPad Pro?

I bought the Apple Pencil 2nd generation with the iPad Pro at first it was working but once it ran out of battery it stopped, Bluetooth is on and when I attach it to the iPad Apple Pencil appears at the top but not the charging symbol.

Just for anyone having this is issue in future, I just had the same problem with my Apple Pencil because it’s been sat in my pen pot for about a year without charging. I put it on my iPad to charge and it came up with ‘0’ after a few hours I checked the charge still ‘0%’ googled it and was told I’d need to buy another one because I’d left it too long and the battery and completely drained and would no longer hold charge.

It has now been on my iPad for roughly 5-6 days constantly.. And finally today! It’s on 86% and climbing! Might not work for everyone I’m not sure but worth a try before buying a new one :)

This is most likely because when the battery went dead, if you don’t get it on the charger soon, then the battery gets too drained to be able to take a charge anymore. This usually happens when the battery gets drained all the way and then goes too long without getting charged, or just sits for a long time even when the battery still has a decent charge and there is still draw from the battery by the pencil and the battery gets too low. These batteries are usually kept safe by the device turning off and shutting down before the batteries get too low, however, even when the device shuts off, it can still draw some power as well as the batteries just naturally lose charge when they aren’t being used over time.

If the pencil is still under warranty you can take it to an Apple Store or get in touch with Apple Customer Service and see if they can do something for you. There is no guarantee that they will, but it is worth a try.

This worked for me. My pencil was sitting for nearly a year. I tried to charge it 3 weeks ago and left it plugged in for almost 5 days to no avail. It wouldn’t get past 0%. I followed all the troubleshooting steps including restarting my iPad and doing a hard reset. Then today I plugged it in again and left it for 5 hours. When I came back it was at 100%! I was just looking at replacement pencils yesterday so I’m so glad to have my current pencil working. I will be sure to charge it weekly moving forward.

Yeah there’s no way I’m buying a new Apple Pencil Gen 2 it died. My Gen 1 could be dead for days and still charge and keep a charge for days after. My Gen 2 barely keeps a charge for more than a day and it sits on the three magnetic dots on the side of my iPad when not in use. It doesn’t charge that way even when it was brand new from the Apple Store. So I have to use a charging cord :\

The second generation Apple Pencil cannot be charged using a cable connection. The second generation Pencil can only be charged inductively when docked to the magnetic charging dock of a compatible model iPad.

If your Apple Pencil can be charged using a cable, then you don't have a second generation Pencil. Instead you either have a first generation Pencil, or a USB-C Pencil. The USB-C Pencil can attached to a compatible iPad magnetically, but can only be charged/paired using a charging cable - as described within the iPad User Guide:

Pair and charge Apple Pencil (USB-C) with iPad - Apple Support
