You've got it backwards.

The OS is the OS and as such doesn't try to actively support any peripherals; it provides a platform for potential peripheral usage. Printer makers are responsible for making their products work with macOS. Not the reverse.

They do that with compatible drivers, or making their printers support Apple's AirPrint service.
