My (old) iPhone 6 (iOS 12) can't natively read & decode 2D barcodes other than QR Code, e.g., Data Matrix or Aztec. To read such 2D barcodes I have to use a dedicated app. Is it still the case with iOS 16? And with forthcoming iOS 17?

That is not a feature of iOS 16 and is not an announced feature of iOS 17.
I would not expect to see that as a native feature of iOS in the near future.
It would serve very little purpose to the average user.

B. Recommend this to Apple:
Do your Part: Being of no option, let apple know what feature(s) you want to see added. Apple wont get back to you directly, but the more they hear of this, the more they will know what their customers prefer and what features need to be added.
Fair enough, but it does not make it a better answer.
For an iOS feature to be implemented, what should be its expected proportion of users?
NB: iOS is available in Catalan, absolutely useless for 99.5% of users (spoken by about 5 million people, 0.5% of an estimated user base of 1 billion).
