Screen doesn’t light up for notifications

If my phone is flat or stationary and I get a notification, say from email or Snapchat or a text, my phone will vibrate but NOT light up. I usually keep it on silent so I do not know if the ringtone would still play, but it DOES vibrate.

i have an iPhone 13 pro, and have scoured my notification settings and sounds/haptics and there’s nothing indicating a change in the screen lighting up.

my phone is not in “do not disturb” and it does vibrate.

iPhones have a feature called "Attention Awareness" that uses the front-facing camera and ambient light sensor to detect whether you're actively looking at the screen. If your iPhone determines that it's face-down or not being actively looked at, it might suppress the lighting up of the screen to avoid unnecessary disruptions.

I am also experiencing this with my new iPhone 15 pro. I have played around with my settings and nothing I do results in my screen lighting up when I get a notification. I turned “always on display” on and I do not believe that is working either.
