to run a 40 Gb Windows software in a Mac Air

MacTracker shows (Model Number A1466, EMC 3178) to be a MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017). That's an Intel-based model. Its Model Identifier (shared with the Early 2015 Air) is MacBookAir7,2.

Apple shipped those with 128 GB and 256 GB SSDs, but you can get internal SSDs that hold as much as 2 TB from Other World Computing.

There is a note in fine print on the OWC site that states "Aura Pro X2 is designed for APFS file system available on macOS 10.13 High Sierra or higher. Upgrade to macOS 10.13 or higher before Aura Pro X2 SSD install."

The MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017) was like the Model T when it came to RAM. You could have any amount that you wanted, as long as that amount was 8 GB. The RAM is soldered in, so there's no way to add more. You may want to check that 8 GB will be enough for a Boot Camp installation of Windows, and the Zeiss application.

In addition to the others, I use Parallels (another VM Manager), with my Macs to create a Windows VM to run Windows-specific apps. This comes in handy when your Mac has limited internal storage for Boot Camp.

I use VMWare Fusion free to run several installations of Windows 10. Works just fine on 2015 and 2020 models.

The single file can reside on any Mac formatted drive, but an SSD is highly recommended. HDDs are just too slow ... even the faster ones.

Note that if your 13" MacBook Air is a M1 or M2 model,

• Boot Camp won't be available
• Even if it was, you wouldn't be able to use it to install the Intel version of Windows
• You can use Parallels to install Windows 11 in a virtual machine – but it will be Windows 11 for ARM

Depends on the model/year/cpu of your Mac.

You can install Windows using Boot Camp Assistant on intel Macs but you'll need much more than 50GB space to do so.

That would be an Intel CPU 2017 model.
