Web Interface for Mail

Hi guys,

I am a recent convert from M$ to Apple. I was recently asked to set up a Snow Leopard Server with Mail, Collaboration, File Sharing, VPN and such.

Compared to the sort of deployments I am used to with Exchange this has been a pleasant breeze, but I have a question which answer I have not seemed to find on the forums.

With MS Exchange by default either accessing the back end servers on setting up a dedicated front end you get a OWA (Outlook Web Access) which is a web interface so users can log in and access mail, contacts, calendars and so on.

I have noticed that the Mail service for Mac does not seem to have this out of the box, so could someone recommend a web interface like the above?

Webmail services are in the box. OS X Server uses Squirrelmail as web interface. It's a collection of PHP scripts, not very pretty, but quite serviceable.

From ServerAdmin > Web > Sites > Web Services, the check Mail. The URL will be something like https://yourdomain.com/webmail/

Configuring Squirrelmail from the CLI is done via the following.

sudo /usr/share/squirrelmail/config/conf.pl

No calendar or address book in Squirrelmail either...if you want a web-based collaboration you'll want to track down @Mail or eGroupware or Citadel or one of many others. Most are $$ but some have community editions. Even Zimbra has a community edition.

I use rcmail. It's opensource and pretty easy setup.

I too came from a Windows background. I used to run Exchange, but, wanted to convert the last piece to OSX. I wasn't a big fan of the built-in services of SLS when comparing them to Exchange. Hopefully Apple improves this in the next release (integrated mail, calendar, and address book, etc.) They did it for MobileMe, so, I can't imagine it would be difficult.

At any rate, I purchased Kerio Connect for collaboration. REALLY easy to setup and manage and I am completely satisfied with the product. I run it on OSX of course, but, it can also run Linux and Windows.

no calendar for rcmail...does it have group addressbook with CardDAV.

If your looking for a good webmail, contacts, & calendars client that taps into imap, carddav, & caldav you should look into atmail. Looks good and works well.....

Think the URL is www.atmail.com

Atmail gave me just a bit of sticker shock. Reminds me of why we ran away from CGP.

If you are running something at home (probably not likely in this particular case), atMail seems to offer a fully functional version of their product that is good for 5 users from the get-go.. The claim is that if you like their product you can just buy more licenses.. I'm planning on trying it out since 5 licenses will work just fine initially..
