Messages and phone calls intermittently crashing after iOS 16.6 update
Both my partner and I updated to ios16.6 from 16.5.1 while on vacation last week. Since then our Messages aps and our phone aps sometimes crash when trying to send messages or make calls. Force quitting the Ap does not solve the problem - we need to shut down the device and start up again. Sometimes we can send a number of texts or make a number of calls before it freezes again. This happens both with iMessages and with cell carrier texting. My cell carrier (Consumer cellular) said it was a problem for Apple. I spent over an hour with Apple tech support and we were not able to resolve the issue. The person I spoke with agreed this was likely not a carrier issue since it happened with iMessages as well. Things we determined were not causing the problem:
- there is no VPN connection interfering
- there is plenty of storage space on the phone
We tried reinstalling the update from a Mac in recovery mode. This does not seem to have solved the problem.
This is getting very frustrating. Any suggestions of other things to try? Thank you support community.
The two phones are a 2020se and an XR.
