Noise cancelling doesn't work...fake AirPods?

I recently bought AirPods pro (gen 1) and quickly discovered that both the active noise cancellation and transparency functions don't make any difference in environmental sound. The serial number on the box matches the serial number on the product, and it checks out as a valid serial number on Apple's check coverage website. I bought these AirPods from a third party, so I'm starting to wonder if they might just be convincing fakes. Is there any way other than verifying the serial number to have definitive proof of authenticity? If they are real, how can I get noise cancelling to work? The mesh is clean, the AirPods have been reset numerous times, the ear tip test indicates a secure fit.
