spoken content making up words August 2023

I have used spoken content on Iphone 13 for my kindle app for a year or two. Sometime in the last week (August 2023), it is not reading many words correctly, dropping off the first letter or last letter or just changing long vowel to short vowel. Some examples... the word get is now "g" "et", two syllables. Table was tabl (short a). I have heard many examples that I'm not listing here. I was listening to a book, and the character's name is now pronounced differently than last week. I didn't change any settings and was using voice Siri 4 for English. I noticed current locale is now is an option under default language. I rarely go into the setting because it worked so well so I am not sure when that showed up. It was checked. I changed it to English to see if that was better; it was not. I had detect languages turned on, but I don't remember doing that either so might be default. I turned it off, and still no change. Is anyone else having this issue? I am on iOS 16.6. I'm not sure when I did that since I do many updates automatically. I can't say if that changed anything. Sorry for all the "not sure when" statements because this function has always been pretty decent. I know it's hard to trouble shoot when I do not know status of changes on my phone. I have confirmed with a reader friend, and she is having the same issue. I am unsure of her settings though.
