how do you get your old email back as the apple id

i changed my apple id by creating a new gmail. but now i want my apple id to be my old icloud email. how do i get it back?

iPhone 11, iOS 16

That usually means you are using it as a backup email address. Log in to https://appleid.apple.com and check.

it won’t work it says “ this email address cannot be used as an apple id at this time”. this email address was my old apple id but i changed it and i need to change it back to this one.
