Scanner portion, and printer utilities, have disappeared from Epson XP-960 networked scanner

We have been using the Epson XP-960 all-in-one printer/scanner for several years now. it is plugged into network (Airport Extreme), and System Settings > Printers & Scanners has no trouble locating, adding to printer list. However the Printers & Scanners page does not include any scanner info. The printer prints fine, Epson software is up to date, and I installed printer firmware to make sure up to date. But when I open Epson Scanner 2, the printer/scanner cannot be found on the network, in fact it cannot be found even when plugged directly into computer by USB, even though it appears in the Epson device list for Printer Settings when either networked or plugged in. No help available through Eson, just the usual driver downloads etc, which are up to date. I recall in the past how connection setup happened through System Settings, we have used Epson Scanner for years... any idea what is going on and what could be a fix? Using Mojave 10.14.6 on late 2012 macbookpro 13.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14
