There are a few reasons why Safari might be taking up 5GB of storage on your iPhone 12. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Safari stores temporary files in the cache to load pages faster. Over time, these files can accumulate and take up a lot of space.
  • If you have downloaded any files in Safari, they will also be stored in the browser's storage.
  • Safari keeps track of your browsing history and website data, such as cookies and login information. This data can also take up a lot of space, especially if you have been using Safari for a long time.
  • If you have enabled the offline reading list in Safari, it will store entire webpages for you to read when you are offline. This can also take up a significant amount of space, depending on how many pages you have added to the list.

To free up some space, you can try clearing the cache, deleting downloaded files, and clearing your browsing history and website data. You can also disable the offline reading list if you are not using it.

Here are the steps on how to clear the cache, delete downloaded files, and clear your browsing history and website data in Safari:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Safari.
  3. Tap on Advanced.
  4. Tap on Website Data.
  5. Tap on Remove All Website Data.

To delete downloaded files, open the Files app and tap on the Downloads folder. Select the files you want to delete and tap on the Delete button.

To disable the offline reading list, open Safari and tap on the Bookmarks icon. Tap on the Reading List icon and then tap on the Settings icon. Toggle off the Enable Offline Reading List switch.
