How do you convert a jpeg to a HEIF image on an Apple Laptop

Are the photos you want to convert to HEIF in your Photos Library?

The current versions of Photos for Mac are not yet supporting the conversion to HEIF.

We have to do it in two steps:

• In Photos, select the image you want to convert.
• Go to the menu "Image > Open with, then select "Preview" as recommended by Sparks0829
• When the photo opens in Preview, go to the menu "File > export" and select the HEIC format and set the quality slider to a high quality.
• Save the exported photo to your Desktop and reimport it to Photos. Compare the metadata and fix missing metadata, then delete the original in Photos.

If the photo is captured on an iPhone, it should already be formatted as HEIF. Learn more about how that works here: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support
