Backup folders with iCloud (need to sync selected folders due to not enough space on device)

I have a iCloud plan and I have space for my backup on the cloud service, but not on my Macbook. When I try to backup my files, there is an error that I don't have enough space on my computer. How can I pick what folders are sync'd to my Macbook so I don't get this error?

iCloud is not a backup.

Syncing won't free up space as a copy would remain on both devices.

You cannot choose which folders are synchronized. Desktop & Documents are the only ones that synchronize.

If you have Desktop & Documents sync'd, you can turn on Optimize Storage and it will move seldom-used files to iCloud Drive and not keep a copy on your Mac.

You can move files into other folders on iCloud Drive. just drag them from your Mac folder into iCloud Drive folder.
