My MAC is stuck with the Apple logo and progress bar

Came to my MAC this morning and it appears to be midway through an update. But it’s stuck.

I’ve rebooted. I’ve rebooted from the net via the Option-Command-R option. It loaded fine and came back up but was in Safari mode and wouldn’t do anything else. So, hoping that it had installed a whole new OS, I chose the reboot. Back to the same place Apple logo and the progress bar. Stuck again in the same place.

Have you tried all of the steps in the Apple Support article you arrived here from yet? If so, at what step did it fail?

When boot up stalls at the Apple Logo/Progress Bar, that typically indicates an issue with kernel extensions (kext items). Kernel extensions are mainly device drivers. They are stored in /System/Library/Extensions.

A few things you can try:

  • Shut down your Mac.
  • Remove all external devices, except the keyboard & mouse.
  • Boot up your Mac in Safe Mode. Ref: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Also, it would help if you can provide the following additional information:

  • Which exact iMac model do you have?
  • What version of macOS was it running? What version are you trying to upgrade/update it to?
  • Why did you need to use Recovery Mode? That is what was your Mac doing that would necessitate having to reload its operating system?
  • Command+Option+R would attempt to start up your Mac in the Internet version of the Recovery Mode. Is there some reason you needed this mode vs. the standard Command+R (non-Internet) mode?

Hi thank you very much for your detailed response. I’ve been through those steps. It turns out I have a corrupted disk. I’m now in the process of setting up a new volume and loading a new OS. Once this is done I’ll try to move my data across and then I’ll clean up the old piece of disk.

Fingers crossed this will work out.

Thanks again. It’s the first time I’ve used this forum - up too now my systems have always run as expected. You were very helpful.
