How to close all desktop documents and apps

New to Mac OS - used windows for years but I have a new MacBook Air - can you help?

As was mentioned, using Automator is the ticket. I created an Automator App and then put in Applications. Then created an alias on my desktop to it. Before I install any updates, I always run that first which then closes all open apps running on my computer. This also prevents the problem of the OS opening everything that was running after the update reboot.
