Exact same files appearing across different user Accounts, how to stop it!

I have two user accounts on my MacBook to segregate work related files from private.

Recently I logged into my work account and all the files on my desktop from my private appeared on my work desktop, and when I logged back into my private account, my work files appeared there.

It's a mess.

Moving or deleting files on one desktop in one user does the exact same thing on the other.

How do I stop this?

I need my accounts to have segregated desktops.

Hey mrkenk,

It sounds like not so much that having the Apple ID on the user account is causing the issue as having a specific feature set up. Go through the steps below and let us know if that clears up the issue with the desktops syncing.

"Turn off Desktop and Documents

  1. From your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings. In macOS Monterey or earlier, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences.
  2. Click Apple ID, then click iCloud.
  3. Next to iCloud Drive, click Options.
  4. Deselect Desktop & Documents Folders.
  5. Click Done."

Click on finder > Go > Home > your user name and another admin account was created when you log out first admin account and create a new admin account , you also have changed read and write permissions Change permissions for files, folders or disks on Mac - Apple Support for second user account from Mac " A " .

The files from first admin account are copied and pasted with shared folder .

Once file sharing box is enabled from Mac system preferences , you clicked on plus sign , under finder > iCloud Drive selected the document say " English " and it saved .

The second Mac " B " is also signed in with same Apple ID and password on the same network with

Mac " A " .

So file shared will be duplicated with Mac " B " with the help of shared folder , so when you delete files from first Mac , it will be deleted from second .

To stop this uncheck the box of file sharing from Mac system preferences or you can select the folder " English " and click on subtract sign see the article Set up file sharing on Mac - Apple Support

Note : your iCloud Drive and desktops and documents box are also checked on both Macs , the files on iCloud will only sync but will not duplicate at www.icloud.com that is not related to duplicate file sharing with Macs .

Yes, I do have Apple ID linked to both.

Does this mean I should unlink the Apple ID to prevent this from happening?

As for iCloud, it was under my impression that that it would merely back up my files to the cloud but wouldn't duplicate it across Users...

Or would I be forced to unlink my iCloud from one of my User accounts as well?

Please let me know and thank you for your help,

iCloud is designed to sync files and data across user devices. If you're logged into the same Apple ID on work and personal accounts, your iCloud sync is doing as designed (iCloud is not a backup but a synchronization service). You may be best served by creating a personal Apple ID and a work Apple ID if you desire.
