Why isn’t there a way to label Bluetooth devices? I have numerous sound bars in the house and it gets confusing not being able to label them some way?

There should be a way to label the different Bluetooth devices you have. Regardless of what it’s name is as a device. Like kitchen sound bar or bedroom speaker, AirPods, etc.

See if this helps -

Rename a Bluetooth accessory on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

  1. Open the Settings app, then tap Bluetooth.
  2. Make sure that your Bluetooth accessory is turned on and wirelessly connected to your device.
  3. Tap  next to the connected Bluetooth accessory that you want to rename, then tap Name. (Some Bluetooth accessories can't be renamed.)
  4. Enter a new name, tap Done on the keyboard, then tap . The new name should now appear in Bluetooth settings.

You can though.

Click on the little information icon on the right of the device in Bluetooth settings.

That should take you to a screen which shows the Name and device type.

Click on the name and in the next window you can change it.

I literally just did that now with my UE Boom to test it.

You can, IF the manufacturer permits the renaming of their device. You can't if the manufacturer doesn't permit it. You have a device, which permits renaming. That doesn't mean all Bluetooth devices can be renamed. Because many cannot be renamed.

If you're referring to 3rd party branded Bluetooth devices, it has nothing to do with Apple. The manufacturer of the device has to give the ability to change the name of their device. I have some 3rd party Bluetooth devices I have the option to rename. I have some, I don't have the ability to rename. Thats on the manufacturer to give you that option.

One place you can look is in the app for a Bluetooth device, IF the manufacturer has an app. You may be able to change the device name in the manufacturers app.

Yeah right. So even premium brands don’t automatically translate to the option being available. I think the biggest factor in my thinking everything could be renamed now was some seriously low budget vehicle head units that I could rename as it was always cheap devices that my early iPhone models had the most problems with.

I guess the best we can do is what you’ve done and just raise awareness that it’s not an Apple hardware/software shortcoming but manufacturers own restrictions at play. Doesn’t solve anything per se but should definitely take some bite out of people’s frustrations when encountering limitations like this.

kudos.

I know years ago I could never make changes. But over the last few years I’ve changed more than I can remember different devices and vehicle units without any hiccups. Figured the issue had been resolved. Cheers for the info though as no doubt in the next couple of months I’ll most likely encounter then issue, so won’t be scratching my head now when the time comes.
