Found my stolen iPhone - now it is unavailable

We had an iPhone 12 Pro stolen and then we managed to get it back. The screen still says "iPhone Unavailable" and our only options are Emergency or Erase iPhone. We've tried in iCloud or Find My but can't do anything there. Reading other posts it seems like the person tried repeatedly to get in or tamper with it so due to its security features the only option now is to Erase iPhone.

Can someone give me some guidance about what steps to take from here? What will happen if we select Erase iPhone? We're okay with it being reset and losing the media and data on the phone but are unsure what steps will be taken if we choose to erase it. I assume it will still be somehow connected to our Apple ID or original phone password. Otherwise the thief could have simply erased it and started from scratch.

Troubleshooting a Locked iPhone:

"Unavailable" means your iPhone is locked out. So, get this serviced.

Hold it Right There!

Being Locked Out...

Enter the passcode incorrectly too many times, and you'd likely be locked out for good. So, hold it right there, and refer to this link: If you Forgot the Passcode on your iPhone, or your iPhone is Disabled - Apple Support. It would be the one you've always entered. If you do not know it, then look for it in a location you may have stored it in.

No Success?

Contact Apple support:

If you cannot get the above link to work, then contact Apple Support.

Apple Contact Info:

  • Contact Us - Choose Locations
  • Proceed from there, as necessary
  • Why the Wait: Phone calls are taking a bit to go through at the moment, due to lots of calls. With the Coronavirus Pandemic, many are at home at the moment, with much time on their hands to contact Apple. So, just stay on the line, and you will get through.
