When opening a video on Apple TV, it opens and then immediately closes again

This is a new problem, as of today. This morning I tried to play a video from the TV app on my MacBook, and it opened a window, then immediately closed it again. It worked before, but not now.


This happens when I have an external monitor connected. It even happens when I try to play the video on the Macbook's screen when the external monitor is connected.


I have an M1 Pro Macbook Pro. My second screen is a 43" 4k Insignia NS-43DR620NA18 TV, HDR and HDCP 2.2 compliant. I am connected via the HDMI port.


I tried rebooting the computer. I have tried downloading the video. Now it just closes even faster. I tried other videos, and videos that worked yesterday. Nope. I have just now updated to Ventura 13.5.1. Still nothing. I tried changing the resolution in the Displays setting. I tried enabling the High Dynamic Range switch in the Displays setting. Nada. I tried updating the firmware on the TV. I tried various combinations of rebooting with and without the HDMI cable connected. No joy.


What is going on?

You've completed some great steps so far to help resolve this. If you haven't already, hold the Shift key while opening the TV app on your Mac. You'll keep holding the Shift key until the app fully opens. This will clear the last known saved state and could resolve the issue.


If that doesn't help, let's continue to narrow this down by testing the issue in a new user account. This will let us know if the issue is specific to your user account or the entire system. Here's how to create that account, just in case:  Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support


Keep us posted on the results.
