GPS not working off Wi-Fi

iPhone 14 pro max

Ever since the last update, any apps with GPS will not work unless I am connected to wifi.

I have turned on location services, shut down each app, redownloaded apps, restarted phone, AND DID A HARD RESET LOSING SOME STUFF TO FIX THIS.

Is anyone else having this problem? What should I try next? Apple is recommending now I go get a new phone but this will be my 3rd phone of the same exact model to try to fix this!

my husbands iPhone 14 is having the same issue.

Global Positioning System (GPS), while an incredibly valuable technology for determining one's precise geographical location on Earth, does not inherently provide access to the internet. This limitation can have significant implications for various applications and services that rely on internet connectivity to function seamlessly. Here's an expansion of this idea:

  1. Fundamental GPS Functionality: GPS primarily operates by receiving signals from a network of satellites in orbit around the Earth. These signals enable GPS receivers to calculate their exact position, typically in terms of latitude and longitude. However, GPS satellites are designed solely for this purpose and do not transmit data for general internet access.
  2. Offline Navigation: GPS technology is indispensable for navigation, as it allows users to accurately determine their location. This feature is especially valuable in scenarios where internet connectivity is limited or unavailable, such as in remote wilderness areas or during overseas travel. Offline navigation apps like Google Maps Offline or dedicated GPS devices use pre-downloaded map data in conjunction with GPS signals to provide directions without an internet connection.
  3. Internet-Dependent Apps: Many smartphone apps and services rely on an active Internet connection to provide real-time data, content, or functionality. Examples include social media apps, weather updates, email services, online gaming, and live traffic updates. These applications usually depend on the internet for downloading and uploading data, which GPS alone cannot facilitate.
  4. Limited Functionality Without Internet: When GPS is used without an Internet connection, it can provide basic location information and route guidance. However, the absence of internet connectivity limits certain features of these apps. For instance, a navigation app may not be able to provide real-time traffic information or alternative route suggestions without an internet connection.
  5. Offline Maps: To mitigate the limitations of GPS without internet access, users can download offline maps or regions through various map apps. These offline maps allow users to navigate and access location-related information without an active internet connection. However, the data available on these maps may be static and lack real-time updates.
  6. Emergencies and Safety: GPS remains valuable in emergency situations, as it can help determine and communicate one's location to emergency services, even without internet access. This capability is crucial for search and rescue operations or when stranded in remote areas.

In conclusion, while GPS technology is a powerful tool for location-based services and navigation, it does not provide internet access. Therefore, applications that require internet connectivity may experience limitations or reduced functionality in areas with poor or no internet coverage. Users should know these limitations and consider alternative strategies or offline solutions when navigating or using location-based services in such environments.
