iPhone 14 Pro Max won't take close-up photos.

I know that my iPhone is capable of taking excellent close up photos. It is one of a few reasons why I bought this phone.

When I use an app called rock identifier, the close-up option works fantastically. However, when I use the camera on its own, for example taking a photo of a wildflower or an insect, I'm unable to get it to focus without moving at least 6-8 inches away.

Please help!

How do I get my camera to take photos that are up-close (1-3" or 2-4 cm) to the subject?

I am grateful for any guidance you can provide!

We understand that you need some help taking close up photos with your iPhone.


You can enable automatic macro switching so that your camera will automatically switch to the Ultra Wide camera when you're taking photos close up as outlined here: Take macro photos and videos with your iPhone camera - Apple Support

"Control automatic macro switching

You can control when the camera automatically switches to the Ultra Wide camera for capturing macro photos and videos.

  1. Go to Settings  > Camera, then turn on Macro Control.
  2. Open Camera, then get close to your subject.
  3. When you get within macro distance of your subject, the Macro button appears on the screen.
  4. Tap the Macro button to turn off automatic macro switching.
  5. Tip: If the photo or video becomes blurry, you can back up or tap .5x to switch to the Ultra Wide camera.
  6. Tap the Macro button to turn automatic macro switching back on.

Automatic macro switching is re-enabled the next time you use Camera within macro distance. If you want to maintain your Macro Control setting between camera sessions, go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings and turn on Macro Control."
