Bottom line - DNG working or not

Here is my dilemma:

I am sitting on four years of DNG files that have been converted from various Canon RAW files types (D30, 1D, 1D2, 1Ds). All of those DNG files have the original RAW file embedded into the file. All of those files import into Aperture, but not correctly. They are all reporting only the resolution of the embedded JPEG preview, which is around 256x171.

Flat out - this is not acceptable.

This app is too new for me to think that it's not me that is doing something wrong, but based on the other posts here, I'm beginning to think that it is NOT me but the program that has issues.

So, to the folks out there that have the answers, or who are confident enough in their claims: Does Aperture truly support DNG or not?

I really am hoping that I did something wrong. If this app does not support RAW files that have been converted into the DNG format, Apple is going to have a very difficult time convincing any Professional photographer that this is truly a professional tool (despite what the video advertisments might have you believe).

Thanks for the help.

I think this comes from other programs embedding some kind of thumbnail and OS X not reading the DNG correctly (filed as an bug a couple months ago around 10.4.2). I had this issue before Aperture ever came out. Try running your DNG through the DNG converter again and see if it takes care of the problem.

That's the behaviour I have with all of my DNG files other than those created for 'supported' raw cameras - i.e. Nikon & Canon and the few others.

None of the Leica/Panasonic formats seem to work although frustratingly you do get a preview image in the import dialog! What's really hurting me is that I have thousands of Kodak DCR files from my digital back and these aren't supported either!

Bottom line: As of today, DNG support is CRIPPLED for anythng but already supported cameras.

Hopefully someone at Apple will get around to supporting the linear mode for DNG and make Aperture the raw processing and asset management tool it promises to be.

It probably has to do with some goofy thumbnail. A couple of my files got them from iView (I think - I doubt it was Bridge and those were the only 2 programs I used). Running them through the DNG converter in my case "reformed" the files correctly.

I don't actually think the files had a problem, I think it is something in Apples Raw parsing libraries. I submitted it as a bug around 10.4.2ish era...

Bottom line - DNG working or not
