What are you talking about? when i'm calling with my iphone 4 (without a case) then i have always this problems. My case is a sleeve so i dont call with a case or something. I take my iphone 4 out the sleeve case when im calling. It costs me lots of money .. this issue. Its a great phone but its a huge issue for us.

All my friends that are using Iphone 4 have this problem. So we have all hardware problems? And who are you deggie? You are working for Apple or something?

Sorry deggie, you're wrong. I go naked (with my phone that is, no case or skin or armor shield). I encounter the problem every time I make a call, transition to speaker phone for a while, then go back to the handset mode. There is something wrong with the hardware or the software the interacts with the sensor. I'm a technically savvy person and design application specific software for private industry. I can offer up many plausible causes but Apple's not paying me for that so I'll just suffer in silence (almost silent anyways)

No, just another user like yourself. But I do know a lot of people with iPhone 4's (more than 30 at last count) and none of them have the proximity sensor problem any longer. Maybe you and all of your friends have hardware problems with your sensor. Get it serviced. Or sell it and go get your Sony.

There is another update (iOS 5.1), there is a chance that will help you. But like I said there were hundreds of pages of posts until July of last year, a few in October and 3 so far in February. That would pretty much indicate from the software side Apple has fixed the problem or there would be hundreds of posts each month.

No, no brainwashing just a lot of people with a working iPhone 4 and no proximitiy sensor problem. I really don't care one way or another what you do but any reasonable person can see the 5.0.1 update addressed the proximity issue. iOS 5.1 is on its 3rd beta version now. That was what I was referring to.

Personally I don't think you will ever be happy with your iPhone. Go for the Sony.

Wow, already gone to name-calling.

All I am saying is if there is some small point they missed, and your 40 employees have contacted AppleCare and given them their information (if indeed this is true) then it could address it. Of course if all of these iPhones were purchased at the same time it is possible there was an entire run with weak or defective proximity sensors. I would take all 40 to the closes service center to be looked at.

And with that, I am done with you. Goodl luck to you whatever way this goes.

I recently switched from AT&T to Verizon. I had an iPhone 4, 16g, black for AT&T, and when I switched to Verizon, I had to change phones too. I now have an iPhone 4, 16g, white for Verizon.

When I had my AT&T iPhone 4, I NEVER once had this sensor issue. However, with my Verizon iPhone, I have it ALL the time. It happens whether the phone is in a case or not, with a screen protector and without.

Apple has certainly not fixed this.

As for the reference above to IOS 5.1 from February ... the IOS 5.1 update came out TODAY, so I don't know what that was about. Seems to me that deggie may be an Apple employee after all. :/

As a sidenote: while I was waiting to get my iPhone 4 for Verizon, I had a Sony Xperia Play for a couple months. That was the single worst phone I have ever had in my entire lifetime of having cell phones! I would not recommend that to ANYONE! Using that phone, I was missing my 1999 Nokia!!! Seriously!

Ok, while I KNOW that it has nothing to do with my cellular service provider, it is important to note that between the two carriers, there are significant differences in the hardware of the iPhones for each. One has a sim card; the other does not. One is designed for CDMA compatability; the other is not. I was simply pointing out that I have had experiences with two different hardware versions of the iPhone 4, and with one I did not have the sensor problems, while with the other I am.

I hope that clarifies.

Something very interesting happened to my iPhone white 4s. I took my iPhone to the Apple store to get the screen repaired. Since my screen has been repaired, the proximity sensor is now less sensitive. I took it back to the Apple store where I got it fixed and we did a side-by-side comparison. While his iPhone's screen would shut off when he held a finger about 2-3 inches from the phone, mine only shuts off when you're about a 1/2 inch from the PS.

He showed me a front panel and it is evident that the PS is not part of the front panel so it's odd that the screen repair has anything to do with the PS sensitivity. Plus, if there were any issues, wouldn't you think the PS would either work or not work versus being less sensitive?

He's looking into it and will get back to me. Otherwise, I'm going to try a full reset to see if that helps. I tried a hard reset and it didn't do anything.

My Verizon iPhone 4 is still having the proximity sensor issue with almost every call (My iPhone 4s did not have this problem). It's extremely infuriating, they should re-call this phone because of this fatal flaw (it works poorly as a phone). Unfortunately for Apple, I believe human nature actually exacerbates this problem once it occours the first time and we lose faith in the sensor. My ear presses mute so I instinctively try to hold the phone further from my ear to prevent pressing a button with my ear, this confuses the proximity sensor (it can't tell if it's by your ear or not) and increceases the frequency of mis-reading button presses by the ear. Even occouring with the new iOS 7.0.3 (iOS 7 is stupidly slow on the iPhone 4. I would not recomend upgrading)
