Formatting TOC in Pages Mac

I have to fit a table of contents in my pages file of 70 pages. Now while finishing, I realized that the TOC won't take any texts (say "Heading 1") into consideration while forming a TOC, if its in a shape (which is the case with me). My question is there any other way, rather than having to completely reformat the whole document, so that, the TOC does take those "Heading 1" texts inside the shapes into consideration.
