Spinning wheel in macOS Contacts

I have a problem with the spinning wheel in contacts on my MacBook Pro. It is processing slowly. I read this thread: Mac Contacts extremely slow — Spinning Wh… - Apple Community, but I do not believe my issue is with iCloud. I have over 4000 contacts. Is there a maximum? I wonder if I need to purge my contacts so that the spinning wheel will not keep appearing when working in contacts.

The iCloud sync seems to get into a bad state where Contacts is effectively un-usable. This has been happening for a long time (years, google for yourself). The main reason I stuck with Apple over the years was the ecosystem, but since Steve Jobs died, it's deteriorated drastically. Apple doesn't seem to be interested trying to fix this particular problem with their core offerings on MacOS. If it were a problem with the iPhone, Apple Music, or the App store, perhaps it would be a different story. I'm exploring other solutions to replace Apple's core products, I suggest you do the same.

Hey KurtDuane,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. As it turns out, you can have a total of 50,000 contact cards with iCloud. Those details and other iCloud limits can be found here: Limits for iCloud Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Bookmarks, and Maps - Apple Support

Let's start to narrow this down to resolve it. As always, you'll want to be sure your Mac is fully updated as updates help by installing those bug fixes and security updates. Here's a guide on updating, just in case: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

Another good idea is to check to see which accounts are syncing with your contacts. Is it only iCloud? If you're using more than iCloud, turn the accounts off one at a time and test to see if the behavior continues in the Contacts app. Here's a guide that will help to check. You don't mention the macOS version installed, but it can be changed at the top of the guide: Add contacts from iCloud, Google, and more to Contacts on Mac - Apple Support

Let us know what you find!

Take care!

It seems to me that my spinning wheel in Contacts is connected to iCloud. If I turn off syncing my Contacts to iCloud, how will that affect my Contacts? Will it delete them? I also sync Contacts between my MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPad, so turning off iCloud would interrupt syncing right? I would like to turn off Contacts in iCloud as a test to see if the spinning wheel disappears, but I would like to know the consequences and any risks first. I certainly do not want to lose any contacts in the process. Thanks for your help.
