Erase content and settings on obsolete Mac

Reading about erasing content- settings on old Mac. It is obsolete. OSXEI El Capitan Early 2008 10.11.6. What impact on signing out of iCloud and iMessage. Does this impact my iPhone or iPad in any way. What is recommendation?

Follow the instructions in this Apple document: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support  


If your 2008 Mac is too old to follow those instructions you can connect it to your current Mac via ethernet cable, i.e. Target Disk Mode, and use your new Mac to erase the drive.


If you're just going to recycle it don't worry about installing a system.
