Was told I have some suspicious activity on my mac air (not sure if I believe the tech who told me that) and want to run a scan for viruses. Looking for suggestions on what app to us to complete the process.

Add-on anti-malware apps are available, but tend to introduce as many or more issues as the apps might address.
And "suspicious activity" is rather nebulous description.

I'm with MrHoffman. "Suspicious activity" is very vague. Who was this technician? Could they have been trying to sell you something?

In this tech's opinion you provided sufficient evidence to discredit that tech's opinion.
No additional action is justified.
This Mac has very little installed, has the built-in anti-malware running and with the protection-related definitions from a few days ago loaded, and nothing installed appears at all odd.
A backup daemon and a self-analysis tool did get a little busy, but I’d not be concerned about either without some overt issues.
I don’t see anything concerning here.
