viruses have been detected on my MacBook Air. What should I do

Since browsing the web last week, I have been getting constant notices that I have viruses. Clicking on the link provided brings me to a McAfee scan site, that when prompted, scans and finds 5 viruses. It then says I need to buy the antivirus protection software. Is this real or a scam? Should I buy antivirus software from McAfee or another provider (like Norton)?

Hey there!

It sounds like you've accidentally installed aware. These are fake pop-ups you're seeing.

You can use the free version of macOS to scan your Mac:

Install Malwarebytes for Mac v4

Then, go to Safari and choose Safari (top left) > Settings > Websites, scroll down and choose Notifications and remove any sites shown. Then do the same to remove any sites in the Pop-up windows and Content Blockers section as well.
