i am trying to backup but it keeps failing - why??!!

I have an iphone 6s iOS 15.7.8. I got a new phone, an iphone 11, so I am trying to move to the new phone, but everything keeps failing.

I tried to move to the new phone by placing it next to my old phone and followed the prompts, but it failed - I think because it needs to be iOS 16.

I tried to backup to icloud, but the backup keeps failing, i get a "backup could not be completed" message. I have plenty of icloud storage space, am connected to wifi and power and it fails every time I try.

I also can't backup to itunes or finder, i get a "Could not back up because an error occurred" message. My macbook is iOS 13.5.1.

Please help! How do I back up this phone in order to move to the new one? Is my iOS 15 causing the problems, and if so how do i resolve?

iPhone 6

The main cause of iCloud backup problems is VPN; if you are using it, try turning it off, and, if that doesn’t help, delete the VPN profile.

For computer backups to a Mac with the version of Mac OS that you have a corrupt previous backup can sometimes cause a backup failure. Connect your phone and click on it in the Finder sidebar; after a (too long) wait the General screen should appear in the window to the right. Click on Manage Backups, delete any older backups leaving only the most recent. Then right-click on it and choose Archive. This will force a completely new backup. The go back to the General screen and click Back up now.

You will have to “trust” the computer by entering your phone’s passcode on the phone when prompted
